Bristol City 2-1 Hull City
Adam Baker reports from Ashton Gate
Jamie McCombe's stunning overhead kick fired City top of the Coca-Cola Championship.
Dele Adebola's third goal of his City career set City on their way to the 2-1 win, albeit via a setback - Liam Fontaine's unfortunate own goal on the stroke of half-time.
But just moments after the restart McCombe struck the winner, acrobatically with an overhead kick, and despite a late scare when Fraizer Campbell hit the post, they held on for three vital points.
City lead the table from Stoke with just 11 games left.
City had an early scare when, inside 45 seconds, Henrik Pedersen broke clear down the left and crossed to an unmarked Caleb Folan in the penalty area. However, the big striker lost his footing at the vital moment and landed on his backside as the ball squirmed harmlessly wide.
But, with no further worries, Adebola had City in front on 14 minutes. Neil Clement misjudged a high ball forward and the former Coventry forward pounced to lash an unstoppable volley beyond Boaz Myhill.
Hull responded well and missed further chances when Folan shot straight at Adriano Basso from 20 yards and Richard Garcia fired high and wide when well placed.
Jamie McCombe inadvertently deflected a goal-bound Folan attempt wide of his own post on 28 minutes and Pedersen headed wide from the resultant corner.
In a brief spot of respite for City, Nick Carle picked out Adebola in the middle, who wrestled away from his marker to nod straight into the arms of Myhill.
But moments before half-time Hull levelled, and deservedly so. Ian Ashbee missed his initial kick when given too much time and space in the box, but he still had time to compose himself and drive a cross against Fontaine's knee, which diverted the ball in.
The lead lasted the length of the half-time break, however, as City were in front within 60 seconds of the restart - and in spectacular fashion.
Lee Johnson's lofted free kick caused all sorts of problems for the Hull defence and as the ball looped up McCombe executed a stunning overhead kick to send the ball crashing into the top corner.
Lifted by their instant second-half strike, City continued in the ascendancy with McIndoe attempting to chip Myhill only to see it fall short.
The home side went closer still on the hour-mark as Ivan Sproule went on a promising run and forced Myhill into a diving save with a low shot. Sproule got to the rebound first and set-up Adebola in the middle but his low shot was deflected wide brilliantly by Sam Ricketts.
Hull responded to the onslaught by introducing Jay-Jay Okocha - and the Nigerian wizard drove a low shot into the side-netting moments after coming on.
City were back on the attack when David Noble, fresh from the substitutes bench, fored over from Adebola's cross.
But there was real drama at the death as Folan bundled his way into the box and handed strike partner Cambell an open goal to shoot at - only for the forward to fire against the upright.
City dug in and held out for another massive three points.
