Bristol City 0-1 Hull City
Adam Baker reports from Wembley Stadium
City's Premier League dream ended in the most heartbreaking of fashions with a 1-0 defeat against Hull City at Wembley.
Dean Windass's 39th minute volley proved the difference between the two teams in a tense encounter, dubbed the £60m match.
But despite a series of half-chances as City pressed for an equaliser, it wasn't to be for Gary Johnson's men.
After some early jostling between the two teams it was City who carved out the opening chance on five minutes. Marvin Elliott's flick found Dele Adebola in the penalty area. The striker had muscled his way clear from marker Wayne Brown but could only stab his shot into the arms of Boaz Myhill.
Elliott created City's opportunity in and around the Hull penalty area, teeing up Nick Carle 25 yards outs. The Australian jinked his way past one defender before toe-poking the ball just wide of the post.
Bradley Orr needed treatment on a head wound following a clash of heads with Nick Barmby when clearing a dangerous Dean Windass cross. And from the resulting corner Michael Turner powered his header narrowly wide of the mark.
Orr was still getting his head patched up when Sam Ricketts' cross from the right was guided just over the top from Richard Garcia, who had made a late dash into the middle.
City were just enjoying large spells of possession when Hull snatched the lead on 39 minutes. Fraizer Campbell was forced wide by Liam Fontaine, but the on-loan Manchester United forward composed himself to pick out Windass on the edge of the box with a delightful pass. Taking the ball on the volley, Windass fired the ball into the top corner leaving Adriano Basso no chance.
Orr's earlier head collision got the better of him just before half-time, with his bruised left eye closing fast. And Lee Johnson replaced the concussed defender - Elliott switching to right-back. Orr had been rushed straight to hospital with a suspected depressed fractured cheekbone.
Carle flashed a shot wide and David Noble curled a free kick straight at Myhill as City started the second period in promising fashion.
Another McIndoe free kick was diverted wide by the shoulder of Brown and from the resulting corner Trundle headed just wide at the back post.
It was becoming end to end stuff with the hour mark up. Campbell shot into the arms of Basso, while at the other end Noble guided a Jamie McAllister cross at Myhill.
Trundle's trickert on 73 minutes almost had City back in the game but after skipping past two defenders the forward's right-footed shot was comfortably held by Myhill.
Then McIndoe took aim and forced Myhill into a diving save. But soon Basso was called into action as Garcia drove a shot straight at the Brazilian keeper.
With time ticking way Elliott's challenge with Myhill handed Trundle a glorious chance but Turner got his body in the way to stop a certain goal.
Substitute Byfield twice missed the target from the inside the box with City pressing and pressing, but it wasn't to be on a frustrating afternoon for 38,000 City supporters.
